This workshop introduces students to the creative and technical possibilities of lace appliqué within the context of contemporary bridal couture. Widely used in bridal design, lace appliqué is valued for its versatility and its ability to create intricate decorative surfaces while remaining efficient and adaptable. Drawing from her experience as a bespoke bridal designer, Romina Fochesatto will guide participants through the process of transforming existing lace motifs into a unique embroidered composition. Students will learn how to analyse lace structures, isolate individual motifs, and reposition them to create harmonious designs suitable for garment surfaces.

Throughout the workshop, participants will explore techniques used in couture bridal embellishment, including lace cutting, placement, securing methods, and subtle embroidery enhancements that integrate the lace seamlessly into the base fabric. Attention will be given to balance, texture, and composition so that the final design appears cohesive and refined. Students will produce a personalised lace appliqué sample while developing an understanding of how lace can be manipulated to create movement, depth, and visual rhythm. By the end of the course, participants will have gained both practical and conceptual knowledge of lace appliqué, along with an appreciation for how the technique is applied in professional bridal couture. The  workshop encourages experimentation and creative decision-making while maintaining the precision and craftsmanship associated with couture embroidery
techniques.

Guest Tutor – Romina Fochesatto

Romina Fochesatto is a fashion designer specialising in bespoke bridal gowns, with a strong focus on couture techniques and hand embroidery. She founded her bridal label in Argentina in 2010, where she spent many years designing and producing unique, handcrafted gowns for brides seeking highly personalised garments. Her work combines traditional couture craftsmanship with contemporary design, with particular attention given to textile manipulation, lace appliqué, and delicate embroidery techniques. Each gown is developed through a careful creative process that prioritises both aesthetic refinement and comfort. Since relocating to the United Kingdom in 2019, Romina has continued to develop her practice within the bridal industry while also sharing her technical knowledge through teaching. Her work frequently explores the relationship between lace, embroidery, and garment construction, drawing inspiration from natural forms and organic textures.

Romina was a finalist in the 2020 embroidery competition organised by Hand & Lock in the Fashion Category. She later continued her professional development at the same institution, completing the Tambour Beading course in 2022. In 2023, she returned to Hand & Lock as a guest tutor, sharing her expertise in couture bridal techniques. With over sixteen years of experience in bespoke bridal design, Romina brings a strong understanding of how embroidery techniques are applied within couture garment making. Her teaching approach focuses on helping students understand both the technical precision and creative freedom that lace appliqué offers. Through her workshops, she encourages participants to explore the expressive potential of lace while maintaining the high standards of craftsmanship associated with couture embroidery.
