Please note this is an onsite class which will run from 10.30am-4.30pm at The D-Day Story, Portsmouth.

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings so please join us for this special 'Make Do and Mend' hand embroidery class at the D-Day Story, Portsmouth on Saturday 20 July.  During the day you will also be able to see the Overlord Embroidery stitched by the RSN from 1968 to 1974 and many of the incredible objects housed within the museum.

The ‘Make do and Mend’ campaign was introduced by the  British government during World War Two to encourage people to get as much wear as possible out of the clothes they already had.  Evening classes were set up to teach people how to repair old clothes rather than throw them away.  Today the clothing industry has the second largest carbon footprint after fossil fuels and more people are turning to mending and repurposing their clothes to stop them going to landfill.

In the spirit of 'Make Do and Mend', RSN Tutor, Sonja Galsworthy will be teaching various methods for visible darning, making a feature of the moth holes, tears and worn patches of your well loved garments.

Using the Japanese example of celebrating the repair rather than making it invisible, Sonja will cover Sashiko patches, Appliqué, Visible Darning, Eyelets and other Surface Stitches using contrasting colours so the stitching shows. Soon your favourite clothes will all tell a new and unique story.

Please note that there is no kit with this class, so bring along your items that need mending, some vibrant fabric for patches, some multi coloured threads, needles and scissors. Sonja will also bring along fabric scraps and coloured threads for you to use.

You will be able to borrow ring frames, and scissors on the day.  You may like to bring your own embroidery scissors and magnifiers.

All the stitches covered in this class and more can be found on the RSN Stitchbank.

The workshop runs from 10.30am to 4.30pm at The D-Day Story, Clarenc Esplanade, Southsea, Hampshire PO5 3NT (please arrive by 10.15am). You may want to bring a packed lunch and drinks although the Café will also be open on the day. Hot drinks and biscuits will be supplied!
