Please note this is an RSN Experience class which will run from 10am-4pm at The D-Day Story, Portsmouth.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the completion of the awe-inspiring Overlord Embroidery stitched by the RSN from 1968 to 1974. To celebrate, we will be teaching this beautiful Dove of Peace class at the D-Day Story, Portsmouth on Saturday 28 September.  During the day you will also be able to see the Overlord Embroidery and many of the incredible objects housed within the museum.

The Dove design uses Appliqué techniques and some of the stitches used to create the Overlord Embroidery.  The design is worked onto a dark blue Irish linen, while the bird is Appliquéd in an ivory silk satin.

On the day, RSN Tutor, Sarah de Rousset-Hall will teach you all of the techniques you need to know to complete the kit including: Appliqué, Bayeux Stitch, Couching (thread and Japanese passing), Fishbone Stitch and Stem Stitch.

This class is suitable for all levels and your kit will include everything you require to complete the project after the class. You may like to bring your own magnifiers but you will be able to borrow ring frames and scissors on the day.

The Overlord Embroidery tells the story of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy in 34 extraordinary hand-stitched panels with a total length of 83 metres. It was stitched by the RSN using more than 50 different materials including actual uniforms.

All the stitches covered in this class and more can be found on the RSN Stitchbank.

The workshop runs from 10am to 4pm at The D-Day Story, Clarence Esplanade, Southsea, Hampshire PO5 3NT (please arrive by 9.45am). You may want to bring a packed lunch and drinks although the Café will also be open on the day. Hot drinks and biscuits will be supplied!
