Please note this is an onsite class which will run from 10am-4pm at Hillsborough Castle, Northern Ireland (20 minutes from Belfast)

We are delighted to partner with HRP's Hillsborough Castle and Linen Biennale 2023, to offer this stunning hand embroidery class at the Castle on Saturday 26 August. After your class, you will also be able to enjoy the glorious gardens and the Life Through a Royal Lens exhibition until 6pm.

RSN Tutor Sonia Lee will be  teaching her beautiful design inspired by a Georgian waistcoat from the Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection, which is housed at Hampton Court Palace.  The waistcoat belonged to Sir James Wigram who was an MP in the 1840s and once he retired, he was made a Vice Chancellor, a Knight Bachelor and a Privy Councillor.  The waistcoat would have been worn as part of his Court Dress Suit. (View images of the original waistcoat in the product gallery).

During the class you will learn embroidery techniques including split stitch, long & short stitch, stem stitch, satin stitch, straight stitches and card padding. Your  motif will be stitched on linen using both stranded cottons and silk threads.

The class cost includes all materials and necessary equipment. All aspects of the motif will be covered during the class and a full instruction booklet will be included in the kit to enable you to complete the embroidery at home. You will be able to borrow ring frames and scissors on the day but may like to bring your own embroidery scissors and magnifiers if you need them.

All the stitches covered in this class and more can be found on the RSN Stitchbank.

This event includes entrance to Hillsborough Castle’s 100 acres of historical gardens and to the Life Through a Royal Lens exhibition.  You will be able to visit the gardens and the exhibition after the class until 6pm.

The Linen Biennale Northern Ireland is an initiative of R-Space Gallery, Lisburn. It presents a full programme of events, initiatives, and community outreach  running from August - October that celebrate the heritage, and future of linen and flax on this Island. The 2023 Biennale is supported through The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Full program and further information: www.linenbiennalenorthernireland.com
