The aim of this one-day course is to raise your awareness of the importance of lettering and for you to learn to designing for your material, text, location and function.

We will be looking at traditional and contemporary letter forms; discuss overall design, layout and spacing - what needs to be considered for a pleasing design and how to train your eye to that effect. There will be discussions and a practical aspect where you will be drawing traditional lettering and create your own lettering design to deepen your understanding of the importance of good lettering in whatever medium it will be used in.

Lisi Ashbridge

Letter carving is both an ancient discipline and a contemporary art form. Raised in Switzerland with a family spanning many cultures, Lisi studied in Italy, London, Scotland, and Oxford, an international perspective that sharpened her fascination with how people communicate across boundaries—an interest that now informs her designs and carving. She started her career as a Neuroscientist specialising in visual shape recognition, but returned to her love of art and making, training with the celebrated letter carver Caroline Webb. In 2010 she established her own studio, working closely with clients on commissions that are not only visually balanced but emotionally resonant. Each project begins with understanding the meaning behind the words, their setting, and the material, ensuring a result that is cohesive, timeless, and deeply personal. Her practice spans classical inscriptions and abstract asemic writing, always with an eye on how the human brain decodes visual information. She also teaches at the King’s Foundation and West Dean College, and serves as a Trustee of the Lettering Arts Trust, helping to safeguard a centuries-old craftLisi is an elected member of the Master Carvers’ Association, Lettering Arts Trust and a Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST) scholar.

Please note this is an in-person class at Hampton Court Palace, East Molesey, Surrey KT8 9AU.
