By exploring historic examples of capital letters and
decorative elements, you will create and sketch your
own monogram designs. At the end of this first creative
stage, you will select one design to translate into
embroidery with guidance from experts at the Royal
School of Needlework.

Design inspiration will be drawn from historic
manuscripts spanning many centuries, including
Roman Capitals, Uncial, Carolingian, Lombardic,
Cancellaresca Corsiva, and English Roundhand,
alongside contemporary examples by Henri Matisse
and others. In addition to exploring these letterforms,
we will incorporate decorative details such as acanthus
leaves and ornamental patterns.

On the second day of the course, you will work with an expert tutor from the Royal School of Needlework to bring your chosen design to life in stitch. Using traditional metal thread embroidery techniques, you will learn how to add decorative metallic details and embellishments to your personalised lettering design. Guided through the process step by step, you will explore how metal threads can be used to create texture, dimension and highlights, transforming your monogram from a drawn concept into an embroidered piece inspired by centuries of decorative craftsmanship.

Stephanie from Studio Gill is a London-based

Before establishing her calligraphy studio in the UK,
Stephanie worked in public relations following her
studies in History of Art, Drama, and Literature in
Germany and York.
Alongside her passion for calligraphy, Stephanie
completed a three-year diploma in botanical painting at
the Chelsea School of Botanical Art and is currently
studying the art of heraldic painting.
