RSN Learn to Draw for Embroidery Course Overview.
You’re a stitcher who wants to create your own designs - you’ve got lots of ideas but you don’t know how to get them down. You need some confidence to have a go a working out your own pieces, and some help with choosing colours, understanding how to put them together and create a balanced and interesting design. Have you had a terrible experience in art class at school but you still yearn to make your own designs? This series of classes is for you! These are three short courses which together form a great introduction to all the skills you need to help you think visually, generate a range of ideas, and understand how to work with colour and what makes a composition:

Learn to Draw 1: Essential Skills For Embroiderers. 2 days.
Learn to Draw 2: Get Confident With Colour. 1 Day.
Learn to Draw 3: How To Create Your Own Beautiful Designs for Embroidery. 1 Day.

The classes are designed to be flexible so you can take them as you want.
We will be using ZOOM online platform, skillfully facilitated to ensure everyone gets time to ask questions and get feedback. We will also be using online noticeboard Padlet to share your drawings and other resources. Links
and instructions for these will be sent before the class.

Learn to Draw 3: How To Create Your Own Beautiful Designs for Embroidery. 1 Day.
It will help to have some drawing experience to get the most out of this day. Consider taking the Learn to draw For Embroiderers courses 1 and 2 first.

How do you choose and combine your source ideas to generate lots of possible designs?? This course will give you time-tested principles of composition, and processes and tools which you can play with to generate unique and original designs. We’ll learn some simple ways of thinking visually about your ideas, and how to develop one you like. We’ll explore the difference between designing for a technique or to express an idea you want to carry
out in stitching, and look at some examples of embroidery designs and stitch artists’ work.

We will warm up with some drawing. Then, starting with images and resources of your own you have gathered and observed, photographed or collected, or from some ideas Caroline will provide, you will select and combine
these into a number of design ideas. It’ll be hands-on: lots of drawing, using tracing paper, scissors and glue. You’ll choose one idea to develop and by the end of the day know how to progress it further, and what other plans or information you might need to create.

On this course you will:
Understand different ways of collecting and storing ideas.
Learn some principles of composition and design, and play with them.
Understand how to select and bring together mark-making, tone and colour.
Think about what properties thread, fabric and stitch have and how to use them.
Think about the ‘look’ of different techniques and how that might affect your ideas
Learn how to think visually: play with the design process to generate design ideas
Understand the importance of having a brief
Create something to a brief provided by the tutor or something you identify yourself.

There will be time to work on a design from your own source materials, and discuss it with the tutor.
