Please note this is an Exclusive RSN/Royal Collection Trust Partnership Class to be held at The Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace on Thursday 5 October.  Early booking is essential!

We are delighted to continue our partnership with Royal Collection Trust with this exclusive hand embroidery class inspired by the acclaimed exhibition, Style & Society: Dressing the Georgians at the Queen's Gallery Buckingham Palace.

Your day will begin with a highlights tour of the exhibition, led by Deputy Surveyor of the King’s Pictures and exhibition curator, Anna Reynolds. Anna will showcase some of the most magnificent portraits, clothing items and accessories on display, including the wonderful portrait of Queen Charlotte by Thomas Gainsborough which inspired the delicate motif you will be stitching on the day.

During the class, RSN Tutor, Sarah Smith will teach you all the steps to embroider this beautiful Shadow Work design. You will learn how to create a translucent white organdie ‘window’ in white linen using reverse applique bordered with pin stitch to recreate the delicate sheer fabric of the Queen’s dress. You will then create a golden rose motif within the window using gold metallic thread and the shadow work technique. Gilt spangles will add shimmer and sparkle to the design.

Finally, you will create four delicate but simple shoulder designs in Whitework on the linen to frame the design and add interest. These reflect the simple floral tendrils which decorate the Queen’s hair and are completed in Stem Stitch, Detached Chain and French Knots.

This class is suitable for all levels and your kit will include everything you require to complete the project after the class. You may like to bring your own magnifiers but please do not bring scissors as you will be able to borrow ring frames and scissors on the day.

Style and Society: Dressing the Georgians explores what fashion can tell us about life in 18th-century Britain, a revolutionary period of trade, travel and technology which fuelled fashion trends across all levels of society. Please see a preview of the show HERE. You will also be able to visit the exhibition after your class ends until the gallery closes at 5.30pm.
