Please note this is an Exclusive RSN/Royal Collection Trust Partnership Class to be held at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh.

If you love stitch and Christmas, what could be better than taking an RSN Experience Class at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh on Sunday 3 December when it is beautifully decorated in readiness for the festive period?

Join us for an exclusive hand embroidery class and create this stunning Jacobean Crewelwork motif. The design is inspired by embroidered bed hangings from the bed chamber of Mary, Queen of Scots and students will be treated to an expert-led viewing of the bed.

RSN Tutor, Helen McCook has used the colour palette and meandering floral motifs of the bed hangings to create this stunning design which will be a one day class, worked in crewel wools to linen twill ground. The kit includes the printed fabric, needles, instruction booklet and all woollen threads needed to work this design.

The seventeenth-century crewelwork bed hangings surrounding the bed in Mary, Queen of Scots chambers have been worked in a variety of stitches in greens, browns, and pinks on a linen / cotton twill ground. They show an intricate and beautiful design of meandering trunks with large, scrolled leaves arising from flowery hillocks.

However, for many years, a different bed was displayed in the bedchamber, featuring crimson silk damask hangings and known, romantically, as ‘the couch of the rose of Scotland’. In reality, neither bed is of Mary’s time, yet the crewelwork hangings surrounding the bed in the chamber today contribute to the powerful and romantic atmosphere of Mary, Queen of Scots’ Chambers.

This class is suitable for all levels of skill including beginners.  You may like to bring your own magnifiers (battery operated only please), but you will be able to borrow ring frames and scissors on the day. Please do not bring your own scissors.

This event includes an expert-led viewing of  the bed and other precious objects on display at the Palace
