SS25ONL09 Castle of Happiness Inspired By Jacobean Embroidered Caskets NEW
£358.00
This class is part of the RSN International Summer School 2025
Inspired by illuminated medieval manuscripts, Tudor pattern books and the delicate silk embroidery of Jacobean embroidered caskets and mirrors, this class includes a combination of silk shading and metal thread techniques to create this image of an idealised ‘Castle of Happiness’. Constellations of stars align in the sky, and the rainbow and heron are included as traditional symbols of peace and prosperity.
The work is intricate and delicate, although many of the stitches used will be familiar to students who have completed Jacobean Crewelwork or Silk Shading Certificate modules with the RSN. They include Long and Short Stitch, Burden Stitch, Chain Stitch, French Knots, Couching and Padded Satin Stitch. Although students will be taken through all of these stitches during the class, some previous experience of embroidery would be helpful.
Stitched on a background of Ivory silk dupion, the threads used are predominantly fine Chinese mulberry silk filament, but also include very fine silk gimp, silver filament thread, silver passing thread and 3 mm silver spangles.
You can explore many more stitches on the RSN Stitch Bank.
