Please note this is an onsite partnership class which will run from 10am-4pm at Eton College, Windsor

We're delighted to announce a new and exclusive Goldwork hand embroidery class in partnership with Eton College, Windsor on Saturday 23 September. The event will also include an opportunity to view key objects from Eton College Collections with Curator, Rebecca Tessier.

Join RSN Tutor, Sarah de Rousset-Hall to create this stunning Goldwork Fleur de Lys brooch inspired by an early 19th century Montem salt bag, currently on display at the College in the special exhibition, Ad Montem: Eton’s Lost Procession.

The bag, since repurposed as a cushion, features the Eton College crest and motto ‘Floreat Etona’ (please see image in product gallery). Eton College Collections comprises over 160,000 items including including art and artefacts, manuscripts and archives, rare books and natural history specimens, ranging in date from prehistory to the present day.

Working in Gilt and Silver Plated metal threads onto a gorgeous blush pink silk satin, this class will introduce students to some key Goldwork techniques as well as mounting techniques to turn your piece into a gorgeous brooch, perfect for adding sparkle to any outfit.

During this one day class, you will learn Felt Padding, Pearl Purl and Chipping before learning how to make the piece up into a brooch, using Running Stitch, Lacing and Ladder Stitch.

The kit includes full written instructions, Silk Satin fabric with the printed design, Silk Dupion fabric for backing the brooch, a fabric cover button, a gold plated brooch pin, felt for padding, needles, beeswax, metal and sewing threads as well as a mini velvet board to help with cutting metal threads.

Some experience of embroidery would be useful but all aspects of the motif will be covered during the class and a full instruction booklet will be included in the kit to enable you to complete the embroidery at home. This class is suitable for all levels of embroiderer from beginner upwards.

The class cost includes all materials and necessary equipment and your kit comprises everything you require to complete the project. You may like to bring your own embroidery scissors and magnifiers and a mellor and tweezers are helpful to have, but not essential.  You will be able to borrow 6" ring frames and scissors on the day.

Joining Instructions:

Registration commences at 9.30am and please report to Porters’ Lodge where you will be met by the team and taken to the historic Election Hall.

Complimentary coffee and tea will be served on arrival, with soft drinks available throughout the day, but please note that in general, food and drink (other than bottled water) may not be consumed in the classroom. Please bring a packed lunch to eat in a designated space or you might like to visit one of the many independent cafes on the nearby High Street.

A map showing Porters’ Lodge and the surrounding area can be found here.

Parking will be available, please contact Amy on [email protected] to secure your space. Eton College is also accessible via Windsor and Eton Riverside or Slough Train Stations.
