In this workshop you will learn 3D beading techniques and how to handcraft your own 3D embellishments and sequins with found materials such paper and plastic. These experimental embroideries are inspired by coral reefs, recreating the intricate forms for the corals through 3D beading and embellishment. At the start of the workshop you will learn the basics of 3D beaded embroidery. Learning how to stack and layer the beads through various 3D beading techniques.

You will start to form the design of your piece on your embroidery hoop with these 3D beading techniques. We will then add in the 3D embellishments. Imogen will teach you how to create your own sequins, form paper embellishments and up cycle plastic to create embellishments. Lots of ideas are given and you are encouraged to be experimental here, testing out what the materials can do. You will leave the workshop with a hoop filled with 3D beading and handcrafted embellishments all inspired by coral reefs. And brimming with ideas for 3D embellishment and beading!

Guest Tutor – Imogen Melissa

Imogen is an embroidery artist based in Surrey, England, and the founder of Imogen Melissa. After graduating in 2018, she built her career as a freelance embroiderer in both fashion and interiors, working with Mary Katrantzou, M Industry London, and Helen Amy Murray. Her work has been exhibited in London and across Europe.

In 2020, Imogen launched Imogen Melissa with the aim of modernising perceptions of embroidery—one bead at a time. She creates intricate embroideries with playful colour combinations, reimagining them as contemporary artworks for the home. What began as selling original artworks soon grew into something new: a limited run of embroidery kits, designed so customers could enjoy beaded embroidery at home.

The kits quickly sold out, sparking a new direction for the brand. Today, Imogen loves designing fresh beaded embroidery and jewellery kits for the modern maker—always experimenting with colour palettes and providing clear, easy-to-follow video instructions. In 2025, Imogen’s Freshwater Pearl & Bead Bracelet Kit was awarded Best Jewellery Kit by Prima Magazine. That same year, her debut book, All New 20-To Make: Beaded Jewellery, was published, featuring 20 step-by-step projects to try at home. Her work has also been recognised in the wider embroidery community: in July 2025 and February 2026 Imogen’s work appeared on the cover of Stitch Magazine. In the July issue the magazine also ran an interview on her - a proud moment celebrating her dedication to the craft. Imogen melissa runs regular workshops and shares her beady world at shows such as The Knit & Stitch and The Stitch Festival in London.

Please note this is an in-person class at Hampton Court Palace, East Molesey, Surrey KT8 9AU.
