Please note this is an onsite class which will run from 10am-4pm at Hampton Court Palace, East Molesey, Surrey KT8 9AU.

The safety of our students and staff remains our top priority. Our classrooms have been arranged to ensure that attending students feel safe and comfortable at all times. There is hand sanitiser available in the classroom. All demonstrations are delivered by use of a visualiser.

In this class, we will stitch an emblem of a portrait of King Charles III to commemorate his coronation.

This design is inspired by the old English embroidery style called 'Opus Anglicanum' where embroidered figures are stitched in a particular style (You can see the example pieces in the MET collection - public domain). This design is the Tutor's interpretation of the style but the technique is the same as done originally, using only a Split Stitch. Participants will be able to explore the expression and texture that only one stitch can create.

The finished embroidery measures approx. 6x7cm.

This workshop is suitable for all levels, but please remember that the Split Stitch we use in this class aims to be quite small (approx. 1-2mm) to achieve the Opus Anglicanum-like look.

The kit includes – Naturally dyed linen (the design is screen printed), silk threads, needles, a magnet(to use as a needle minder), a shower cap(to cover the hoop whilst you embroider) and instructions.

You may like to bring your own embroidery tools such as embroidery scissors etc. but can borrow them on the day as well including ring frames, magnifiers and lights (if needed).

The tutor has created her kit as sustainably as possible, so all of the materials and packages were chosen with sustainability in mind. All materials are biodegradable and the linen fabric is naturally dyed by the tutor herself.

You can explore many more stitches on the RSN Stitch Bank.

The class kit will include everything you require to complete the project. You may like to bring your own embroidery scissors and you will be able to borrow ring frames, magnifiers and lights (if needed) on the day.
