This creative one-day course offers a rich introduction
to the possibilities of goldwork embroidery. Designed
for beginners and experienced stitchers alike, it
explores two foundational and versatile techniques:
couching with metal threads and chipping with metal
purls. Through clear demonstrations and guided
practice, you’ll learn how to handle specialist materials
with confidence while discovering how light, texture,
and movement can transform your stitching.

In this workshop, we focus on developing a
contemporary, playful approach that encourages
experimentation and personal expression.
A specially designed printed fabric provides a vibrant
and imaginative backdrop for your work. Rather than
following a set pattern, you’ll use the design as a
springboard for exploration—creating a series of
unique hand-embroidered samples and stitch ideas. By
the end of the day, you’ll have built a personal toolkit of
techniques and textural studies that can be applied to
future projects, from textile art to fashion
embellishment.

The emphasis throughout is on curiosity, creativity, and
confidence. Whether you are completely new to
goldwork or looking to refresh and expand your skills,
this course will deepen your understanding of metal
threads and open up new directions in your practice.
You’ll leave not only with finished samples, but with the
knowledge and inspiration to continue exploring the
exciting world of contemporary goldwork embroidery.

Please note this is an in-person class at Hampton Court Palace, East Molesey, Surrey KT8 9AU.
