Technical Tuesdays: Term One will run from 7.00 - 9.00pm on the following ten Tuesdays:
September 5, 12, 19, 26
October 3, 17, 24, 31
November 7, 14

Join Jen Goodwin, RSN Tutor and the author of Blackwork Embroidery, Techniques and Projects, online as she introduces you to all the major principles of Blackwork embroidery. Blackwork is a traditional form of counted embroidery worked on linen in black thread. Historically Blackwork is associated with the Tudor period but its history stretches back further and has been reinvented on multiple occasions. Modern Blackwork is now more associated with detailed shaded work which can create a photorealistic feel when worked properly.

The RSN has developed this approach through many years of Apprentices and is continued in the current Future Tutors programme.

The course is aimed at the beginner embroiderer and runs over three terms (of ten weeks each). Fees are termly and decrease with each term you take if you pre-book: £374 first term (including kit), £284 second term and £252 third term.

A kit is included which contains all the materials you will need. You will also need a 24" slate frame or a 24" hand rotating frame either of which can be purchased via the RSN Shop.

If you don't already have the following, you will also need:
• Embroidery scissors
• Tape measure
• Glass headed pins
• Small ruler

September - November 2023
Term One will cover the very basics of Blackwork while forming the first column of a Blackwork triptych sampler (full design to follow)

January - March 2024
Term Two will cover some of the core principles of Blackwork, Shading through tones, adding additional stitches, creating negative space, identifying textures and how to blend patterns. This term the second panel of the triptych is created.

April - June 2024
Term Three will be the term where all of the principles will be pulled together creating a shaded Blackwork design in the final panel of the triptych sampler. There will be 3 designs to choose from (designs to follow)

You can explore many more stitches on the RSN Stitch Bank.
