RSN Learn to Draw for Embroidery Course Overview.
You’re a stitcher who wants to create your own designs - you’ve got lots of ideas but you don’t know how to get them down. You need some confidence to have a go at working out your own pieces, and some help with choosing colours, understanding how to put them together and create a balanced and interesting design.
Have you had a terrible experience in art class at school but you still yearn to make your own designs?
This series of classes is for you! These are three short courses which together form a great introduction to all the skills you need to help you think visually, generate a range of ideas, and understand how to work with colour and what makes a composition:
Learn to Draw for Embroiderers 1: Essential Drawing Skills. 2 days.
Learn to Draw for Embroiderers 2: Get Confident With Using Colour. 1 Day.
Learn to Draw for Embroiderers 3: How To Create Your Own Beautiful Designs. 1 Day.
The classes are designed to be flexible so you can take them as you want.
This class will not be recorded but we will be using ZOOM online platform, skilfully facilitated to ensure everyone gets time to ask questions and get feedback. We will also be using online noticeboard Padlet to share your drawings and other resources. Links and instructions for these will be sent before the class.
Learn to Draw 2: Get Confident with Using Colour. 1 Day
How do you choose colours that work well together? Or find that little pop of colour which will really set off your drawing or embroidery design? This day will help you make sense of the language of colour and confidently
create your own schemes for embroidery designs. You’ll learn how to see them, how different colours mix to create more, and how they work together in designs. You will also be encouraged to develop your awareness of
your own colour preferences and intuitive responses. We’ll look at how we perceive colour, and what this may be affected by. You will create your own colour wheel from just 5 pencils, learning the terminology of colour along the way. You will learn how to use your wheel as a powerful tool to choose schemes and why they work together as they do, and how you can create bold, subtle, harmonising or jarring colour combinations. How does this work with choosing threads? We’ll look at some different types of threads, how to use thread charts, and what the considerations are for choosing colours for your designs. We’ll also consider what effect the background colour has and how light and dark colours affect the visibility of a design.
By the end of this day you will:
• Understand how we see colour, and how light affects that.
• Be able to create colours that you see, in coloured pencil.
• Understand how that will help you mix colours in threads Understand colour terminology.
• Have created your own colour wheel of more than 60 colours from 5 pencils.
• Know how to use it to generate colour schemes.
• Understand how colour and tone work together in design.
• Materials Lists and class requirements will be available in our on-learning learning environment when you sign up.
