The class will run from 10am - 4pm on the following dates:
8 & 9 November 2023

Bookings will close on 7 November

For beginners or returners to drawing, Drawing Basics Day 1 and Day 2 will introduce you to the most fundamental skills of drawing and seeing as an artist, explored through traditional principles. You’ll learn to make drawings from observation and gain the tools to see, understand and draw from a wide variety of subject matter. You’ll understand how different aspect of drawing can support your embroidery interests, and grow your confidence to move towards producing designs of your own. Caroline specialises in creating a supportive and safe environment for learning; by the end of the two days you will have confidence that you can grow your drawing skills.

This class is Day 1 and Day 2 of a structured course of 4 days, designed to offer you a progression in drawing and design right from the beginning. Day 3, gives an introduction to Colour Theory, and 4, From Drawing to Design, takes you the last step and looks at how to compose an original design. You can choose whether to do them all, and when you’d like to take them.
We will be using ZOOM online platform, skillfully facilitated to ensure everyone gets time to ask questions and get feedback. We will also be using online noticeboard Padlet to share your drawings and other resources. Links and instructions for these will be sent before the class.

Day One
You will earn how to use graphite drawing pencils, understand and practise mark-making, and make basic shapes. You’ll then earn how to apply that to drawing what you see, how to check proportions are right, see negative shapes – the spaces between things – and how to scale things up and down. We’ll also look at simple perspective and how that relates to what you see. We’ll practise these skills with lots of observational drawing, looking at simple objects you can find around the home.

Day Two
We’ll concentrate on developing your drawing with tone: how light or dark something is. This is essential for making your drawings look three-dimensional, and for helping designs to ‘read’ clearly. You will explore how tone is created with line in both black on white, and in white mark-making, (useful for Blackwork and Whitework embroidery). It’s also key to planning Silk Shading embroidery. We will work with graphite, charcoal (or charcoal pencil) to explore how to create a wide range of tones, do a classic tonal modelling exercise in drawing and apply that learning to simple forms. We will also look at the use of toned paper as a starting point, and using white in media such as coloured pencils, wax crayons or oil pastels to explore the reverse.

By the end of these two days you will:
• Understand the properties of various drawing media and paper
• Have begun to explore mark-making
• Know how to make basic shapes
• Understand measuring and relative proportion
• Understand simple perspective
• Understand how to create a tonal scale and its use.
• Model simple objects with tone
• Apply that to observational drawing.
• Work on different toned backgrounds
• work light on dark.
