The class will run from 10am – 4pm on the following date:
Wednesday 22 November 2023

Bookings will close on Tuesday 21 November 2023

How do you create colours that you see, in coloured pencil? How can you mix 5 colours together and get 60? How do you choose colours or a scheme, or find that little splash of the colour which will really set off your drawing or embroidery?

This day will help you see more colours, learn how to mix them with blending coloured pencils and create your own colour wheel with tints and shades. Learn the basic language of colour and some ways of choosing colour schemes, as well as considering your instinctive response to it. Collect things you can find around your home and outside: glazed pots, textiles, pebbles, leaves, fruit, vegetables. We’ll then study them closely, learning to see the subtlety of colours they present, and look at how to mix them in coloured pencil, watercolour pencils and other media. We’ll also consider what effect the background colours have and look at how colours relate.

This class is Day 3 of a structured course of 4 days, designed to offer you a progression in drawing and design right from the beginning. Day 1 and Day 2, Drawing Basics introduce you to the most fundamental skills of drawing and seeing as an artist, explored through traditional principles, and Day4, From Drawing to Design, takes you the last step and looks at how to compose an original design. You can choose whether to do them all, and when you’d like to take them.

You will need to acquire the following:
Materials:

  • A4 soft-bound sketchbook or pad - Seawhites or Cass Art are both good.
  • B and 2B graphite pencils
  • A tin of at least 12 good quality colour pencils
  • Water soluble pencils will give you more options, in which case add round and flat brushes and water pots

For anyone who wants to learn or practise their skills of drawing from close observation, a useful skill for creating your own designs. Some basic drawing skills will be useful as we will be doing some observational drawing.
We will be using ZOOM online platform, skillfully facilitated to ensure everyone gets time to ask questions and get feedback. We will also be using online noticeboard Padlet to share your drawings and other resources. Links and instructions for these will be sent before the class.
