This class is part of the RSN International Summer School 2024

This is an in person  class and takes place at Hampton Court Palace. The class runs over five days  from Monday 29 July - Friday 3 August 2024: 10am - 4pm.

This is a form of Whitework embroidery (Schwalmer Weisstickerei) that developed in the Schwalm region of central Germany. It started as a form of surface embroidery in the late 17th century, but during the following centuries the enclosed areas were opened up by withdrawing threads and then decorating them with pulled thread stitches. A Heart and Tulip are among the simple motifs that are traditionally found in Schwalm embroidery. The open areas between the motifs are filled with tendrils, small leaves and eyelets.

The class will also include learning how to finish the design as a bag using a Peahole hem to form the channel through which a twisted cord is threaded before adding the tassels to the ends of the cord. The design is stitched on an even-weave linen.

Some prior experience of counted thread techniques would be advisable for this intermediate/advanced level class.

You can explore many more stitches on the RSN Stitch Bank.
