This class is part of the RSN International Summer School 2024

This is an in person  class and takes place at Hampton Court Palace. The class runs over four days  from Monday 29 July - Thursday 1 August 2024: 10am - 4pm

Combine the traditional hand embroidery techniques of Goldwork and Silk Shading to create this beautiful Ely Knot design.

Over the course of this four day class students will learn and practise many of the essential techniques used to create Goldwork embroidery which will then be combined with delicate silk shading and decorative stitches. The goldwork techniques learnt on the course include: creating felt and string padding, applying gold kid leather, decorative couching and ornué, chipping, cutwork and applying gilt metal threads such as Pearl Purl, Bright Check, Japanese Thread and Spangles. The silk shading and decorative stitches learnt on the course include split stitch and long and short stitch using DMC stranded cotton threads. The embroidery kit provided in the class includes all of the threads, fabrics and needles required to complete this elegant hand embroidery design and the background fabric will be provided with the design already transferred on.

This Ely Knot design was inspired by a 14th century chasuble belonging to Ely Cathedral which features 30 Ely Knot motifs, all worked in gold and silk threads on a base of dark green velvet.

This class would be suitable for those who have had a go at Goldwork embroidery before.

Design dimensions: 20cm x 22cm

You can explore many more stitches on the RSN Stitch Bank.
