This class is part of the RSN International Summer School 2024

This is an in person  class and takes place at Hampton Court Palace. The class runs over three days  from Wednesday 17 - Friday 19 July 2024 10am - 4pm.

Join us in this lovely class as we stitch a darning sampler, to experience a forgotten aspect of embroidery history unique to women, and to enjoy the meditative aspects of the remarkable technique.

A darning sampler is a textile piece specifically crafted to serve as a practice canvas for perfecting darning techniques. It typically features a variety of simulated holes, tears, and worn areas that mimic real-life instances where fabric repair is required. This practical tool allows individuals to experiment with different darning methods, yarns, and stitches, thereby honing their textile mending skills. Darning samplers not only offer a platform for skill development but also hold historical and artistic significance as they reflect traditional approaches to textile conservation and creative repair.

In this class, we won't fix holes, but we'll make beautiful darning patterns. You'll also learn reversible stitches (four-sided stitch and marking stitch) to add your initials and a hemming stitch to finish your creation.

While this workshop is great for all skill levels, it's important to know that counted-thread embroidery might not be everyone's favourite. If you enjoy carefully counting threads and creating with precision, you'll love the sense of accomplishment and calm it brings. But if that's not your style, it could be a fun challenge. Join us for a rewarding experience where you can craft precisely and enjoy the soothing benefits.

The kit includes – 28 count even-weave linen, silk threads, needles, and instructions.

You may like to bring your own embroidery tools such as embroidery scissors etc. but can borrow them on the day as well including magnifiers and lights (if needed).

The tutor aims to create her kits/products as sustainably as possible, so all of the materials and packages were chosen with sustainability in mind.

You can explore many more stitches on the RSN Stitch Bank.
