This class is part of the RSN International Summer School 2024

This is an in person  class and takes place at Hampton Court Palace.  The class runs over five days  from Monday 12 to Friday 16 August 2024: 10am-4pm.

Explore the art of Elizabethan embroidery and learn 16th-century silk and metalwork techniques. Embroider a design based on images from 'La Clef des Champs,' a book printed in 1586 at Blackfriars in London and now kept in The British Museum. This book, filled with woodcuts of animals, flowers, and fruits, served as a pattern book widely used by artisans in various crafts, including embroidery, woodwork, and metalwork. A few design books were available at that time, and many historical embroidery pieces can be traced back to them as references for their designs.

Discover the late Elizabethan embroidery style, characterized by a shading technique using beautiful silks, now known as tapestry shading. It was often used to depict lustrous animal skin and create smooth colour flow. Stitch a borage flower, one of the most frequent choices in Elizabethan times, using a nearly forgotten Elizabethan seeding technique. Add the final touches with silver metal thread embroidery and embellishments with freshwater pearls to make your work truly special.

All skill levels are welcome, including beginners in silk and metalwork embroidery. Basic embroidery skills are necessary for this class, and your kit includes everything you need to complete the embroidery.

You can explore many more stitches on the RSN Stitch Bank.
