This class is part of the RSN International Summer School 2024

This is an in person  class and takes place at Hampton Court Palace. The class runs over three days  from Monday 12 - Wednesday 14 August 2024 10am - 4pm

Spend three days exploring the use of Blackwork in Tudor costume and portraiture.  Drawing inspiration from a Holbein portrait of Jane Seymour and a gentleman’s blackwork cap in the Victoria and Albert Museum, this class teaches students to embroider and make up their own Tudor Sweete Bag.  They will learn how to work a double-sided Holbein Stitch border as well as a typically Elizabethan design of plants and flowers contained within rings or ‘rinceaux’ in a combination of black and gold threads and spangles.  At the end of the course students will be given a full, practical demonstration of how to make up their embroidery into a sweete bag using a French seam and a hem stitched edge.  This class is suitable for students of an intermediate level, who already have some experience of surface embroidery and counted thread techniques.  Stitches covered include: Holbein, Hemstitch, eyelets, stem stitch, chain and seeding to create tonal shading

You can explore many more stitches on the RSN Stitch Bank.
