This class is part of the RSN International Summer School 2024

This is an in person  class and takes place at The Sayre School, Lexington, Kentucky, USA  The class runs over two days  from Saturday 20 to Sunday 21  July 2024: 10am - 4pm (EST).

Step into the world of Tudor costume embroidery with our exclusive Summer School class. Immerse yourself in a combination of embroidery techniques, replicating a raised motif from Henry VIII's garment.

The design is inspired by an image of embroidery from Henry VIII's most famous portrait and captures elegance and opulence of the embroidery work in Tudor-era garments. The portrait is an early derivative of Hans Holbein the Younger's original 1537 portrait of the monarch, which was painted on the wall of the Privy Chamber at Whitehall and was destroyed by fire in 1698.

In the portrait the king wears a gold doublet decorated with elaborate scrollwork resembling interlocked hearts with gold leaves around them. These motifs are embroidered over the king's chest and sleeves adorned with large precious stones.

Guided by our experienced tutor, you will learn how to create corded outlines, sheer appliqué, and use goldwork threads for embellishing using historical techniques. Your kit includes everything you need to finish the embroidery.

Originally designed to complement the exhibition "Holbein at the Tudor Court" at The Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace in 2023, this class presents a unique opportunity to stitch your own masterpiece blending history and craftsmanship.
