The theme of this in-person, onsite drawing day is flowers, historically such an important subject for embroiderers and artists. We’ll study a selection of flowers closely, learning how to see shapes and structures. We’ll also look at how to capture light and shade, making tonal drawings. Then we’ll venture into colour. We’ll also look at how our drawings can support different embroidery techniques, and how flowers might work in designs.

There are some fantastic displays in the gardens at Hampton Court Palace. If weather permits, we will also explore outside and look how shapes, textures and colour combine in borders and flowerbeds.

Gallery stools are available to take outside.

Materials
Please bring your own. The minimum requirements are:

• B and 2B graphite pencils
• plastic eraser and artists’s putty eraser or white tack
You could also bring
• fine drawing pen
• a tin of coloured pencils
• a water brush if you have water soluble pencils.
• Be prepared for sun or cool weather in case we draw outside – e.g. hat, sunscreen, jacket.

Class notes will be provided, and flowers to draw from.
